A faucet that won't yield water will be the very first sign of frozen pipes. When a severe wintry snap hits, prevent freezing and subsequent bursting of conduits by following the recommendations beneath. Even if your water pipes do stop, you can thaw them just before they explode if you act quickly. When temperatures fall very low, here is how to keep the conduits from freezing: Maintain a trickle of water running from the faucets. Beam a heat light fixture or small heater at exposed pipes. Wrap uninsulated conduits by using papers, heating wires, foam, or self-adhesive insulating tape. Keep doors ajar between heated and unheated rooms. Thawing Frozen Water lines If your conduit freezes: Shut off the water at the main shutoff valve and open the faucet closest to the frozen conduit so it can drain as it thaws. Waterproof the location with containers and plastic drop clothing just in case water leaks occur. Use one of the following solutions to slowly warm the frozen water pipe. Make sure you work from the faucet toward the iced-up area. Propane Torch With a flame-spreading-nozzle, the torch will begin to unfreeze a frozen pipe. Safety Tip Shield flammable places using a fire resistant sheet, do not let the conduit get hot to the touch. Hair Dryer Used much like the torch, a dryer will slowly defrost the water pipe. Heating Pad Wrap a length of pipe with a heating pad. Heat Lamp For pipes behind walls, floors, or ceilings, beam a heat lamp 8 or more inches from the surface. Hot Water When no other technique are available, cover the pipe (except plastic) in towels and dump very hot water on it.
